Mr. Thurman Nathaniel Peterson Jr.

Thurman N. Peterson, Jr., affectionately known as "Butter Bean" received his heavenly wings and was called to glory on Monday, September 13, 2021 at Atrium Health Carolina Medical Center, Charlotte, North Carolina. He was born February 27, 1959 to the late Thurman N. Peterson, Sr, and Mary Sue Peterson in Petersburg, VA. Thurman received Christ at an early age. He was the oldest of six children. Thurman was loved by all and his smile would light up the entire room. He was preceded in death by his father, Thurman N. Peterson, Sr; his brother, Dondrill D. Peterson and his nephew, Trevelle Barner. During the early years of his life, he was always searching for knowledge and how to advance in athletics. He graduated from Petersburg High School in 1976 where he received a full athletic scholarship to play football for Saint Paul's College. He graduated with a B. S. in Sociology in 1980. After college he was selected to try out for a professional football team, but decided to accept his Commission as U. S. Army Officer (Second Lieutenant) in the Transportation Corps. Thurman dedicated his life serving and protecting this nation as a Military Officer. After leaving the service with an Honorable Discharge he set his sights on a new career with the U. S. Postal Service where he retired in 2019 after twenty-two years of service as a Senior Manager. He also, owned several successful businesses over the years. Thurman was a huge sports enthusiast. He loved the Kansas City Chiefs and Virginia Tech, but could be found watching ESPN and competing in fantasy leagues at any time. He was an avid bowler and competed in tournaments all over the country. Aside from sports and competing, Thurman loved shooting the breeze with his friends Anthony Bryant, Kelby Lewis, Randy Wiley and Larry Livingston. Above all Thurman was a family man and loved all of his family dearly. He loved his mother "more than words could ever express" as he would often say. They spoke multiple times a day, every day, without fail. Even while in the hospital he would continue checking on her He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted mother, Mary Peterson; three daughters, Lisa Michelle Allmond, of Waverly; Miconda Peterson and Tateasha Peterson-Odom (Nasir) of Philadelphia, PA; a longtime devoted companion, Lisa Sandifer of Rockville, SC; three sisters, Oreette Peterson (Edward) and Natalie Clanton of Petersburg, VA; Beverly O'Neal (Walter) of Raleigh, NC; one brother, Colonel Retired Malcolm Peterson (Zena) of Chester, VA; former spouse and friend, Gladys Peterson of Philadelphia, PA; six grandchildren, Nianya, Hanif, Alyana, Laila, Amir, and Wyndsor. He also, leaves six nephews that he loved dearly, Dennis, Casselle, Verrone, Reckoe (Amber), Quentin (Shomeka) and a host of other relatives and friends. A special thanks to the physicians, nurses, therapist and staff at the Atrium Health Carolina Medical Center. A special thanks to his devoted companion, Lisa Sandifer, and Anthony Bryant who faithfully called to check on Thurman daily. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, September 25, 2021 at the Petersburg Chapel of Bland Funeral Home, 137 Harrison St., Petersburg, Va., 23803, Rev. Herbert Holly, eulogist. The Interment will be held 12 noon on Monday, September 27, 2021 at Virginia Veterans Cemetery, 10300 Pridesville Rd., Amelia Court House, VA., 23002.
